Controversial Mormon Reference Books

I highly recommend the Tanner's "Mormonism: Shadow or Reality?". This book is by far one of the most comprehensive critical books on Mormonism. The book is well referenced and includes many photocopies of the original documents. This 576 page book is a bargain at around seventeen dollars hardback. If you are interested in learning what the critics have to say about Mormonism, this is the first book to get. This book covers topics regarding the Book of Mormon, Mormon Godhood, Plural Marriage, Joseph Smith, the Book of Abraham, the Word of Wisdom, the LDS Temple Ceremony, and much more. You can obtain this book from Utah Lighthouse Ministry, P.O. Box 1884, Salt Lake City, Utah, (801) 485-8894 or through the internet at: http://www.xmission.com/~country/reason/tanorder.htm
If you are interested in the controversial issues surrounding the Book of Abraham, I recommend "By His Own Hand Upon Papyrus, A New Look at the Joseph Smith Papyri", by Charles M. Larson. This book provides a general overview of the debate surrounding the Egyptian papyri and the Book of Abraham including detailed color photographs of the found Joseph Smith papyri. This book is a bargain for Latter-day Saints, costing only $2 shipping and handling. You can order this book by visiting the Mormons in Transition web page at http://www.irr.org/mit/ or by writing the Institute for Religious Research, Dept. MIT, 1340 Monroe Ave. N.W., Grand Rapids, MI 49505. You can also download the text of this book absolutely free from the Mormons in Transition web page.
If you are interested in learning more about Mormon polygamy, I recommend "Mormon Polygamy; A History" by Richard S. Van Wagoner, Signature Books, Salt Lake City, Utah, 1989, 2nd edition (ISBN 0-941214-79-6 pbk. & ISBN 0-941214-35-4 cloth). This book discusses the development of polygamy, polyandry, post-manifesto polygamy, and much more in great detail. The book costs around fifteen dollars in paperback and can be ordered from many book stores, including the Utah Lighthouse Ministry mentioned above and also http://www.amazon.com
